The challenge is to choose at least one of your vehicles and find a direct replacement vehicle whose list price can be found within $1,000 of your vehicle’s clean trade-in value . Feel encouraged to use the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for this. Or use anything you want honestly, I don’t care!

If you would like to swap your entire garage, I’d love to see it! If this is a bit time consuming but you would like to participate still, just list your car and what it’s direct swap would be.

Ex.

My 2006 Kia Amanti has a Clean Trade-in value of $ 4,000 .

I need to replace it with a vehicle that serves the same roll, which is a large, undiscript, premium sedan able to move 4 adults comfortably.

Well I could replace it directly with a Mitsubishi Diamante . This 2002 model is listed at $3,995 with just 31,000 miles more than my Kia.

Kia Amanti Interior

Ex. 2 (without running precise numbers)

The 2012 Grand Cherokee will likely have a clean trade-in of $18,000. It’s purpose is a work vehicle that carries a lot of cargo and travels around 44,000 miles a year. I could probably replace it with a late mid-2000s 4Runner. Not the best answer since I would be losing a lot of power. I bet there is a GM SUV that would be a better fit. However, without the research Im still participating!

Have fun and good night Oppo!

Well, if I trade in nothing, I guess I can buy... this Matrix for $1000 ? I mean, it needs a few new things, but nothing that major.

Can’t argue with that. That Matrix is definitely as good as nothing at all! *no sarcasm, that’s a good deal!

1998 M3: Nada puts it at $3400 clean trade in. Purpose is a toss-able sports sedan that carrys 4 people and makes me smile.

This 328i sport pack costs the same as the trade in, but has about 5,000 fewer miles, isn’t quite as fast or as quite a handler but still spectacular to drive. It also has the one key thing my M3 is missing, a manual transmission.

That’s a great deal! Any running, driving car is worth $1000, let alone an awesome Toyota.

And odometers on those cars stop at 299999 km (applies to every non-US/UK-market Corolla, Matrix, and Vibe/Voltz of that generation). US (and presumably UK) versions stop at 299999 miles. It’s possible that the cluster has been swapped out (Toyota pays for the part, but you still have to pay the labor)

Considering it needs new brakes (~$100) and new tires (~$500) and that’s it, it really seems like a good deal. And I didn’t know that about the odometers!

I drive a Crown Vic. There is no direct replacement for it.

My trade in is valued at $2300 which seems low its a 1996 m edition miata.
I found this 1979 Triumph Spitfire $2500 w/ ford 2.6

am i doing this right?

They haven’t built 9C1s since 1996 and most are piles of heap at this point.

Thats pretty good. I think you could track down an early-mid 2000s Lincoln LS and it would be an even more direct replacement to that M3 at that price point. However, I haven’t driven either.

There are no V8, RWD, Large Sedans in American history that can be found to do the same task at that price point? There must be something! High mileage early Lexus LS even?

Hmm, let’s call it $1,500 if it’s clean. Find something that’s no more than $2,500 that could replace it for you. I’m curious!

My 2001 Prelude with a 5-speed has a clean trade-in value of $2700 (hilariously, it says the automatic transmission, which is prone to failure, is $2900). I could get a decent NA Miata or maybe an Integra GS-R in that price range. Here’s an NA (although Mariner Blue is my preferred color): http://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/5482817001…

I have a 96 I30 with 260k.

The replacement would NOT have a transverse V6! These two seem to be the best values:

Accord manual sedan and a Volvo V40

Nothing below $3700 yet, but there is this Acura RSX Type S for $100 over the limit. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/cto/548496…

If I lived in the Great White North I could import this 2001 Accord Euro-R next month (when it turns 15 years old) with cash to spare, although it has 2 extra doors. http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/HONDA…

Between the Kia and the Diamante I think I’d take the Kia. Eventho the Mistubishi is better looking, I’d bet the Kia is more reliable.

Si my car is a 1991 Galant VR-4. I doubt I could trade it in at a dealership if I wanted to due to age, but in a private party deal I’d say it’s worth about 3,000 in it’s current state. It daily drive-able but it needs work. so if i sold it for 3000, and I have another 1000. I’d buy this. a 1992 Galant VR-4 with all the mods mine needs.

I’ve yet to see an SCX. Ever. There’s only one regular Achieva on Craigslist in my general vicinity.

I also recently saw a couple of salvage title early 8th gen Civic Si’s in the $5000 range, but they’re still a couple years away from “why not” money.

I keep looking at the book values on mine and a clean one on a lot with over 3x the miles is asking $6k, which is way more than book. They don't get anywhere near it without over 150k miles.

Yeah, especially when the automatic version of the same car has a reputation for transmission failures. The first rule of buying a 5th gen Prelude is to stay the hell away from automatics.

Achieva’s are going the way of the Eagle Vision. Driven into complete oblivion until all of sudden there are only 10 left in the US unscraped. I want to pick up these cars and restore them but they may he extinct by the time I get the money, space, and time.

Yeah, they’re getting scarce quickly. I saw a regular 2-door (SC?) recently, not on its deathbed but definitely had seen better days. I expect Preludes to become scarce in the next 5-10 years. Running 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gens are already hard to find, and most 4th and 5th gens I see for sale have been abused either by ricers or just heavy use.

Current garage - A pair of E46s, ‘06 M3 convertible and ‘01 330Ci coupe. Here’s the M3 in its favoured habitat, running around cones while trying to pretend its roofless self doesn’t weigh quite as much as it actually does:

Kinja'd!!!

Swapped garage #1 :

M3 convertible -> M3 coupe

330Ci -> non-M E46 convertible

This maintains top-down happiness while giving the S54 less weight to lug around the slalom course. Downside is that the S54 sounds brilliant with the top down.

Swapped garage #2 :

M3 convertible -> 987 Boxster S for improved cone dodging awesomeness while still maintaining top down capability for nice days (base Boxster would do, but there are a couple S ones around in the right price range).

330Ci -> E39 straight six 5-series for improved back seat capability, or maybe just keep the 330 for mad rallycross action in the winter.

Seems my 05 Dodge Magnum RT has a value of... $6,425.

Ouch.

To replace it with a vehicle that does the same things (ridiculous torque, RWD, fast, wagon), I found very few things:

A V50 Wagon , A 2004 E-Class and a WRX Wagon .

Nothing to tempt me, honestly.

My car’s (2005 Honda Pilot EX-L) clean trade-in value has gone up to 7,000(!) so I’ll replace it with a Mazda 3 since that’s what could happen (hopefully) in a few months. I don’t fully trust the NADA auto guide though.

Here goes nothing:

To replace my ‘05 V50 2.4i with 150k miles which is rated at $3,925 clean trade in I’d have this clean looking ‘07 Saab 9-3 Aero sedan with 131k miles for just $70 more! I would have preferred a wagon, but a V6 turbo for <$4k is too great a deal to pass up.

Kinja'd!!!

Now, my dad’s ‘01 V70 T5 is rated at $1,825 with the 207k miles it has so I figured for an extra $675 or so (lower if negotiations can be made) he can “downgrade” to this ‘98 V90 with only 135k miles in excellent condition.

Kinja'd!!!

And finally, to replace our ‘05 Ody EX-L with 150k miles (though to be honest, I wouldn’t because nothing beats a minivan for day to day errands) let’s go with this ‘04 XC90 3.2 T6 with 153k miles.
